GYULA FORTRESS (VÁR ÉS VÁRMÚZEUM)
This large construction of brick, square and mass, with its high walled walls and central donjon, is the only medieval fortress in the Grand plain. It was built during the first half of the th century by the Maróthi family. From 1552 onwards, it was part of a series of defensive works on the border against the Turks. From 1566 until 1695, the fort castle was in the Ottomans'hands. Today, on the water front front of the fortress is a scene where historical plays are mounted in this fabulous decor. The fortress houses a museum. The angle bastion, used to store gunpowder powder, was converted into wine cellar. It is one of the most interesting Hungarian castles to visit with many explanations in English.
