ALMÁSY MANOR (ALMÁSY KASTÉLY)
The Almásy, a former noble family from the great Hungarian plain, were linked to the manor by the marriage of Countess Stephanie Maria Wenckheim and Count Kálmán Almásy.
The family was very popular in Gyula. The count, a humanist, has improved the situation of orphans in the region and the elderly.
The manor played an important role in Hungarian cultural life: in 1746, it was the first private residence in Hungary to host a play.
The great composer Ferenc Erkel, a very good friend of the Count, often visited the castle to give piano concerts at evening classes.
On the ground floor, in the staff room, a computer tablet helps to imagine the life, tasks and hierarchy of the servants around the mansion. The cellar and its food reserves, wine barrels and delicatessen, the baroque cuisine and its green door that separates the owners and servants. Upstairs, family portraits, clothing for various occasions, extracts from newspapers. We remain fascinated by these authentic rooms and objects of different styles: classic dining table, baroque chandeliers or the Count's room and its neo-Renaissance furniture made of curved wood.
