This is one of the oldest mosques in Tunis, easily recognized by its square minaret, reminiscent of Sunni mosques. Built between 1231 and 1235, it was the first mosque to be built after the Zitouna mosque. Initially intended as a court mosque for the sovereigns residing in the Tunis kasbah, it later became one of the city's Friday mosques. Its location (close to the beys' palaces) explains why it has always been close to power. Restored in recent years, it reopened in 2024.
