Virtually unknown in France, Ibn Khaldun deserves our attention, and his statue provides just such an opportunity! Born in Tunis in 1332 and died in Cairo in 1406, Ibn Khaldun was not only a precursor of sociology, but also a historian, economist, geographer and statesman. Born into an Andalusian family, he lived in a relatively peaceful Maghreb. After an early life in politics, he retired at the age of 45 to Cairo, where he wrote and taught. In The Book of Examples, he recounts universal history. Edifying!
