PARC NATIONAL DE JEBEL ZAGHOUAN

With an area of 20 km2, this magnificent natural park is covered with a forest of holm oaks, Aleppo pines and carob trees, with a rich fauna: the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the Bonelli's eagle, or the Egyptian vulture, but also the wild boar, the jackal, the mongoose, the hare, the lizard, the tortoise and the snake. The Zaghouanese also appreciate this park for its spiritual value: it is here that one finds the mausoleums of the patron saints of the city and in particular of Sidi-Bou-Grabine, one of the first Muslims to have converted Tunisia to Islam.

The beauty of the landscapes of the Djebel Zaghouan, with its steep slopes, attracts many enthusiasts, Tunisians and foreigners, of mountaineering, canyoning and speleology. For those who enjoy hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking, the numerous trails of the natural park of Zaghouan have been carefully marked out. Clubs and associations regularly organize outings. Several climbing routes have been equipped, with the help of the caving and climbing association of Zaghouan (ASEZ), on the slopes of the massif, offering thrill seekers grandiose landscapes. The underground world of Djebel Zaghouan is rich in caves and chasms, some of which are breathtakingly beautiful, where one can discover what nature has sculpted over thousands of years. This mountain shelters the deepest chasm of Tunisia, called the "Chasm of the 4 fools" which sinks to 265 m under ground.
