Three kilometers west of the city, the artificial caves of the Ghar El Kebir site are stone quarries that were exploited in Punic and Roman times, notably for the construction of Carthage but also for the construction of the forts of the medina of Tunis. These "latomies", vast half-dark caves, were dug by prisoners and slaves who extracted the stones. These underground quarries were exploited for nearly 1,000 years and were then used as bunkers during the Second World War.
