Construction of the fortifications began in 916 AD and lasted five years. An inaccessible city, Mahdia played a key political and economic role in Arab-Islamic and Mediterranean history for over 500 years. You can still see one of the plinths, to the north, where one of the two round towers once stood, closing the canal that protected the city's three land walls. The only entrance to the city was then to the south.
