BORJ EL HSAR AND ROMAN CITY
"Archaeological excavations have revealed one of the Roman quarters of Cercinae, the ancient capital of the archipelago, to the astonished eyes of Kerkennians and visitors alike. A survey carried out at the foot of the borj, which stands on an eminence, uncovered archaic strata dating back to the 7th century B.C. This discovery shows that the site is a Phoenician foundation and that Kerkennah's strategic position was noticed and occupied very early on by the Phoenicians in their expansion into the West... Paved streets, some dating back to Punic times. A large transit port with quays and a lighthouse whose submerged structures have just been found. On the seaward side, it was defended by a fine, imposing wall built in the5th century B.C. Rich mosaics in the houses..." (Excerpt from La Presse.)
In front of the fort lies the ancient city of Kerenites, which gave its name to the islands.
Today, there are no more excavations underway in this area, which is nonetheless very rich and eager to reveal its secrets. The finesse of the visible elements allows us to affirm that the Phoenician city was civilized (mosaics everywhere, many cisterns, etc.) and wealthy. Given the rarity of Phoenician ruins, it's surprising that no one has bothered with them! The fort, on the other hand, is of more recent Roman construction and was built just behind the town. It is still standing and should be better maintained....
