GABÈS PALM GROVE
Dating back to Roman times, the Gabès palm grove, also known as the Maritime Oasis, has long been the city's main attraction. The 60 km2 palm grove stretches right down to the sea. From the Ras el Oued promontory, a fine view of the oasis. The tragedy of this palm grove, apart from the heavy pollution, is that the date palms produce only "mediocre" dates, which are not exported and bring in little income. As a result, the palm trees are being "killed" (guide's word!) and the number of palm trees is declining every year, from 400,000 in 1980 to 150,000 in the 2020s. What a tragedy!
