Gafsa is proud to be home to Tunisia's largest snail farm. This is an artificial mound some ten meters high, the result of an accumulation of ashes, tools, human and animal bones, and snail shells, dating back to 7000 B.C. These heaps are traces of human presence, when our forefathers lived in camps. They can be found in the south of the country, with another in a rock shelter in the Oum El Araies region. It's a pity, though, that the site has been abandoned
