MARCHÉ DU JEUDI
Don't miss the Douz market on Thursday mornings, when the town comes alive with a new vibrancy. It's one of the most important markets in the region. Here you'll come across men straight out of the desert, draped in their colorful chèches. The market occupies the central square and street, and is a vast exhibition space for vendors who don't try to lure tourists, although there are a few handicraft stalls. Don't hesitate to have a coffee by the side of the street, you'll be spoilt for choice. You'll see nomads selling fruit and vegetables grown in one of the region's oases, as well as some of the region's best-known handicraft vendors. But it's above all for its livestock market, located below on a square adjoining the palm grove, that this day attracts farmers from all over the region. At the foot of the palm trees, sheep, chickens and rabbits jostle in great numbers, in an atmosphere full of shouts, colors and unexpected smells. Depending on the season, you may also see camels. An incredible crowd of people crowd around the animals. Men of a certain age chat or play cross-legged unfamiliar games while waiting for a potential buyer to show up, while the younger ones keep an eye on the impatient animals. The children are busy selling rabbits and chickens, giving them a chance to learn their trade. A market like no other, and a 100% local experience, as you'll come across very few tourists.
