The Ghomrassen valley boasts rock painting sites dating back 4,000 to 5,000 years: Chaabet El Maarek, Taguet Hamed and Insefri. Settlement of the region dates back to the Palaeolithic and continued into the Neolithic, between 8,000 and 4,000 B.C. These superb paintings in red ochre depict figures as well as domestic (cattle and canids) and wild fauna (felines, elephants, ostriches and antelopes).
