SAINT-MARC BASILICA - MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY
Municipal Art Gallery in Heraklion, the first Venetian church in Crete.
Built in 1239 by the Venetians and dedicated to St. Mark, patron saint of Venice, it was the first Venetian church in Crete. Under the Ottoman occupation, it was transformed into a mosque in honour of Defterdar Ahmet Pasha, who was in charge of finance. In 1956, after renovation work, it was restored to its original appearance. Today a municipal art gallery, it houses a permanent exhibition on Cretan Byzantine frescoes as well as temporary exhibitions.
