CHURCH OF SAINT TITUS - AGIOS TITOS
The relics of the patron saint are in an Orthodox church in Heraklion.
Saint Titus, patron saint of the island and the church, is the first bishop of Crete. Built in 961 in his honour, it had the tormented destiny of the island: during the 16th century, the Venetians transformed it into a Catholic church, but when the Ottomans conquered the city, it became the Vezir Camii Mosque. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1856, it was immediately rebuilt and in 1926 it became an Orthodox church again, where the relics of the patron saint are kept.
