AGIOS MINAS CATHEDRAL
Cathedral dedicated to Saint Minas, patron saint of Heraklion, one of the great cathedrals of Greece.
The majestic Agios Minas Cathedral (Saint Minas, protector of Heraklion) was built between 1862 and 1895 in recognition of the inhabitants' gratitude to this saint who provided them with spiritual support under Ottoman rule. The cathedral became one of the largest in Greece, designed by the architect Ath. Moussis, who was also in charge of the Agios Titos Church and the barracks in Eleftherias Square, now home to the prefecture and courts of Heraklion. Not far away is St. Catherine's, another beautiful building that houses the Museum of Byzantine Icons.
