VENETIAN ARSENALS
Remains of the Venetian arsenals in Heraklion dating from the Venetian occupation.
The Venetian occupation of Crete was affirmed, among other things, by the architectural modelling of the important towns and by the implantation of elements aimed at transforming the economic and social structures of the island. In Heraklion, in the eastern part of the city's present fishing port, the remains of the Venetian arsenals in which galleys were made can still be seen today. It is a construction dating from the 16th century, the only one in the city that has been preserved to the present day.
