Paintings and precious objects in the houses around the palace of Knossos.

Around the palace of Knossos, some houses have been excavated. The House of Frescoes, in the northwest, is famous for its paintings: The Gardens, The Blue Bird, The Blue Monkeys and The Chief of the Blacks (the original frescoes are on display in the Heraklion Museum). In the House of the Sacrificial Oxen and the House of the Fallen Blocks, to the south, sacrificial objects have been unearthed, attesting that one of the destructions of the palace was caused by an earthquake. The luxurious South-East House was also decorated with frescoes and contained precious objects.
