Tomb-sanctuary, the most important monument of Crete.

This tomb-sanctuary, considered to be the most important monument in Crete, was built between 1850 and 1650 B.C. on two floors. On the top floor was the altar. The first floor housed, among other things, a vaulted tomb and a rectangular burial chamber. The funerary urns discovered in the vestibule on the south side of the first floor led Evans to assume that victims of the earthquake of 1600 BC were buried there.
