LYRARAKIS
Visit and various activities in a winery in Archanes.
The Lyrarakis family has been producing wine in Crete since 1966 and today boasts numerous international awards and certificates. Its vineyards, covering 12 hectares, are located in the village of Alagni, 18 km south of Heraklion. If you come by car, take the direction of Viannos and follow the signs. If you arrive by bus, you will have to walk about 600 meters as the parking lot is only accessible to cars. The guided tour lasts 1h30 and must be booked in advance. It includes: the wine press, a walk through the vineyards and the places where the wine is made, a wine tasting and two bottles of wine as a gift. The tasting covers five different types of wine: Lyrarakis Dafni (the dry white, the appellation considered to be the oldest still produced today), Lyrarakis Cuvée Grande Colline (a dry white from the vilana grape variety) and the reds Lyrarakis Kotsifali, Last Souper and Kotsifali Syrah. During the tasting are offered cheese and paksimadi (the traditional Cretan crispy bread). The Lyrarakis estate produces a total of twelve kinds of wine, which you can buy locally for less than in the shops. This will be an opportunity to bring back a very local gift from your stay to your relatives and let them discover the less known products of Crete. And, more selfishly, it will also be a way to immerse yourself in the wine flavours of your holiday in Crete, after the end of your Cretan stay.
