AGARATHOS MONASTERY
Monastery in Myrtia, one of the oldest in Crete.
The monastery, built around 960, was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Founded during the second Byzantine period, it is cited as one of the oldest in Crete. During the Venetian period, it played an educational role for the laity and for the clergy destined for the higher ranks of the hierarchy. The present buildings are from the Venetian period (apart from the remains of the former monastery) and the church was built in 1941. About twenty monks live there today, working in the production of wine and olive oil.
