PANAGIA GOVERNIOTISSA
Beautiful 16th century frescoes in a Byzantine church in Hersonissos.
Above the village of Potamies, an ancient monastery, now disappeared, has preserved its katholikon, the main church of the monastic complex. This cruciform Byzantine church dates from the 14th century. From the middle of the 16th century, the monastery experienced a real apogee: sumptuous frescoes and rich icons embellished the church dedicated to the Virgin. These precious icons are today in the historical museum of Heraklion. On the spot, one can still admire some of the magnificent frescoes dating from the 16th century.
