CRETAQUARIUM
Giant aquarium including fish and invertebrates in a dozen well maintained aquariums.
This giant aquarium, opened in 2006, presents 2,500 fish and invertebrates in a dozen aquariums that reproduce their living environment. We start with the largest specimens, with several impressive sharks, groupers... We pass by exotic fish, jellyfish that dance before your eyes with their aquatic grace. Everything is there, from sea horses to starfish. We get to the smallest specimens, like the baby clownfish that come out of the lab and measure only a few millimetres. The tanks are fairly well maintained and the fish are generally not short of space. We also appreciate the ecological awareness made on the end, on the cleanliness of the oceans: it explains the time it takes for everyday objects to biodegrade. It is educational and therefore very good for children but also for older children. It is a beautiful activity, between education and leisure, to do absolutely when you are in the surroundings of Heraklion.
In a small interactive room, you can touch starfish and stonefish. At the cutting edge of technology, Cretaquarium belongs to Thalassocosmos, one of the largest Mediterranean complexes on marine research. There are often small art exhibitions related to the subject of the maritime world, with free access, at the entrance of the aquarium. There is a lot of information to complement the different basins. Souvenir shop. Snack bar with a breathtaking view of the sea. A very nice visit, not to be missed under any circumstances!
