ST. ANTONIAN CHURCH
Chapel with unique frescoes by Emmanuel and Ioannis Fokas in Malia.
Αvdou is a pretty little village located 40 km from Heraklion, in the east and in the middle of the Lagada valley. At the end of the Byzantine period (beginning of the 14th century), a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony was built here. Today you can see some unique frescoes, unfortunately rather badly preserved. Made by Emmanuel and Ioannis Fokas, they are exceptional because they are the only example of two-coloured frescoes in Crete. Admire scenes from the Gospels including The Deposition at the Tomb, The Washing of the Feet, or The Last Supper.
