Monastery with a two-aisled church, an important building of the Renaissance and Venetian Crete.

Probably built between the 10th and 13th centuries, the monastery played an important cultural and artistic role during the Renaissance and Venetian Crete. El Greco himself is said to have spent time in the monastery's workshop where the most famous Byzantine painter, Mr Damaskinos, worked. The restored building has a two-nave church at its heart. The bell tower, which is separate from the main building, is in Catholic style. Outside, a remarkable Venetian fountain (although badly damaged) depicts Adam and Eve surrounded by three lions.
