RUSSET GORGES
An address offering one of the most beautiful hikes in Crete.
The visit to the Rouvas Gorge is one of the most beautiful hikes in Crete. Although they are accessible all year round, spring is the ideal season to visit them. Subject to the vagaries of the climate, the rise in water levels during heavy rains make them more difficult to access. The green nature, blooming in spring, offers shade and refreshing waterfalls. The gorge ends in the magnificent forest of Rouvas with its oak, plane, cypress and pine trees
From the pleasant lake of Zaros (Votomou). Four hikes are possible. Choose the one to the Agios Nikolaos gorge (also called Rouvas). The other proposed tours are less interesting and, moreover, less well marked. The hike lasts about 3 hours for the ascent and 2 short hours for the return. We walk for about 15 minutes and we reach the monastery of Agios Nikolaos (admire the frescos of the XIVth century!). Thereafter, we go along the river and after half an hour we really enter in the gorges. The walls are abrupt, but we advance rather easily, in the middle of an impressive and superb landscape. The path is well laid out, with stairs in the most difficult places. We advise you to have good sport shoes and to hydrate yourself well. At the exit of the gorge (in the forest), a picnic area has been set up under the shade of the trees. You will also find toilets and a water point. Ideal for a well-deserved break!
