Historical caves by the sea in Matala.
The famous Matala Caves have been occupied since the Neolithic period. During the Roman and Early Christian period, the dead were buried there by digging pits in the crumbly rock by the sea. In some of them steps, windows, small rooms and even beds were created. This suggests that this place was also used for housing. In the 1970s, the caves became famous when a hippie community settled there. The walk offers a nice view of the beach and Matala. At night they are illuminated.
