VILLAGE OF LENDAS AND ITS BEACHES
To reach Verger, located about kilometres from Matala, you must take the road that leaves from Gortyne to the south. It turns and it goes down seriously before you get there. The former Levin (Lebena) was immediately after the current village on the hill towards the west. There is not much left: the remains of a temple with two columns and a mosaic dating from the th century before our age. Levin's sources were considered curative (especially to treat stomach pains), and the Romans took advantage of their virtues. The sources were closed a few years ago. It was not so long ago that the small fishing village Verger, with its small rocky beach at the top of the houses, had an intimate side.
It has developed a little bit in order to welcome tourists and the first impression when you arrive is not very good, but finally the relaxing atmosphere is quite right for you. The bus stops on a land park which is also the end of the road. From there, there are only a few narrow lanes that cross the village or descend to the beach.
If Verger is popular, it is mainly for its long sandy beach (Dykitos) which is 2 km farther west in direction of Kali Limenes. There, tourists (mainly Germanic) install their tents during the season (nudist possible).
Other small beaches are located in the east. There is obviously no post, bank or tourist office, but simply a supermarket where you can spend the day on the beach. Some taverns, kafeneia and rooms for rent are scattered in the village. You can easily stay a few days at Verger if you are looking for relaxation because this place is even more calm than the villages surrounding it.
