A deserted island rich in history in Elounda.

The island of Spinalonga, nicknamed "The Island of the Forgotten" by Victoria Hislop in her novel of the same name, boasts an impressive Venetian fortress overlooking the sea. Originally named Calydon, the island was fortified for the first time during the Hellenistic period. Today, the island is deserted except by tourists who come to discover this site steeped in history. In season, boats leave every half hour from the small port of Elounda, while a large number of cruises to the island are provided by tourist agencies.

Vous aurez peut être lu le livre "l'île des oubliés" - c'est sur cette île que les lépreux habitaient entre 1903 et 1957. C'est une visite chargée d'histoire. Je vous conseille de la visiter avec un guide qui vous fera faire le tour en vous racontant l'histoire. Vous découvrirez les habitations malheureusement laissées à l'abandon de longues années avant que les grecs prennent conscience de la valeur de ce site et de l'ouvrir aux visites. Vous pouvez partir en bateau d'Agios Nicholaos (1h de trajet) ou d'Elounda plus proche.

Spinalonga maintenant célèbre et fort visitée grâce au roman L'île des oublié reste un lieu assez envoûtant. Vous y accéder exclusivement par bateau et pouvez vous promenez 1h à explorer les ruines de l'ancien fort et des occupations lépreuse. La promennade en bâteau est fort agréable. Il y a plein à voir, en 1h il n'est pas possible de tout voir.
