Sitia is a beautiful seaside town in Crete, with a rich history dating back to Minoan times. The new town of Sitia was built in 1870 and is surrounded by heavenly beaches and numerous monuments. The Kazarma fortress is an impressive monument overlooking the bay of Sitia, and hosts cultural events during the summer months. The Sitia Archaeological Museum exhibits artefacts dating from 3,500 BC to 500 AD. Just 12 km from Sitia is the historic 15th-century monastery of Toplou. Sitia is also an ideal starting point for excursions to the Lassithi region, where you can visit the palace of Zakros, one of the largest and best-preserved Minoan palaces, as well as the famous Vai beach, the only palm forest in Europe. You can also take a boat trip to the islet Chryssi, bathed in turquoise waters. Nearby Sitia, you'll find superb beaches such as Petras, Agia Fotia, Agioi Pantes, Platani and Papadokampos.
