ITANOS
An archaeological site dating from the beginning of the Christian era near Vai.
At the northeastern tip of the island, 2 km north of Vai, there is an archaeological site dating from the early Christian era on a small hill overlooking the sea, beautiful at sunset. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Itanos was an opulent city and was among the most powerful in Crete. This was due to the maritime trade and the export of glass made in large quantities in the local workshops, sponges and purple.
