MOSQUE (TZAMI) AND ITS MINARET
Mosque with a fountain in Ierapetra, a place for concerts and shows.
In the centre of a charming little square is an Ottoman fountain associated with a small mosque which today serves as a venue for concerts and other performances. The mosque was built in 1891 and 1892, according to the inscriptions at the entrance and on a medal (south side). The minaret was partially destroyed in the 1953 earthquake. The fountain, a sebil, was therefore used to purify the faithful before they entered the place of their worship.
