VENETIAN FORTRESS OF KALES
Fortress built in the 13th century in Ierapetra.
Built in the 13th century, on the model of those of Heraklion or Rethymnon, then renovated in 1626, the fortress of Ierapetra dominates the port whose entrance it once guarded. In 1508, the fort collapsed following an earthquake, killing 300 garrison men. The name Kalés, under which this fort is known, is actually a derivation of the word Koulés, which in Turkish means "the tower". Since 2020, Kalés has been undergoing restoration and visits have been suspended.
