HOLY METROPOLIS OF KISSAMOS AND SELINOS
Bishopric promoted to the rank of Holy Metropolis, Kissamos being the religious administrative seat.
The first mention of the Diocese of Kissamos appears during the Council of Sardia in 343 and it managed to survive until the Venetian occupation, which forbade Orthodox practice. It was re-established in 1645 and survived the Ottoman period. Kissamos rose up against the Ottomans in 1821: in retaliation, Bishop Melhisedek and Deacon Kallinikos were hanged. In 1962, the bishopric was promoted to the rank of Holy Metropolis; the religious administrative seat is in Kissamos.
