ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Archaeological museum with exhibitions in chronological order and a virtual presentation.
In a pleasant Venetian building that has been completely restored, this exciting museum opened its doors in 2006. On two vast floors, it traces the ancient history of the Kissamos region, from prehistoric times to late antiquity, including the Minoan period and covering largely the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the apogee of the city. The exhibitions follow chronological order, while a virtual presentation, based on scientific data concerning the earthquake of 365 BC that struck Crete and ruined the region and the ancient city of Kissamos, is made available to visitors.
The ground floor returns, among others, to the Minoan city of Nopigeia in Room 1, the two defensive cities of Polirrinia (fortified city of shepherds, hunters and mountain warriors) and Falassarna (armed port city) in Room 2. Most of the archaeological treasures, however, date from the Hellenistic and Roman periods (rooms 2 and 3), which corresponds to a period of great splendour and development for the town of Kissamos. Funerary vases, coins, pottery fragments and Hellenistic statues are presented and richly explained. The rooms on the first floor are devoted to the history of the town of Kissamos in particular and present magnificent finds, including sumptuous mosaics dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries and found under the town square: the first depicts the four seasons and Horace, the second depicts a Dionysian ritual.
