This restaurant run by Tiago (Portuguese) and Eva (Hungarian) received its first Michelin star in 2021. L'Essência is located a few steps away from the Saint-Etienne basilica. The cuisine offered is a perfect blend of Portuguese and Hungarian flavors. The plates presented in a gastronomic way will be composed of a choice of octopus, asparagus and tuna, beef and vegetables... If you do not choose the tasting menu, you will then have as a dessert an orange pie, a "sponge cake"(pão de Ló)... Very good wine list, welcome and service.

One Michelin star restaurant. Very nice Portuguese and Hungarian wine pairing tastings menu restaurant. Tiago the owner is very hands one. Supervise the kitchen staff all the time to ensure quality dishes. Food is great. With wine pairing.

Lovely experience. Had the fortune of sitting next to one of the owners for lunch while the other owner was cooking. Beautiful fusion of Portuguese and Hungarian, with phenomenal presentation and excellent service. We indulged in the five course tasting over lunch and were pleasantly surprised. The photographs speak for themselves. The amuse vouches were the highlight for me -- three phenomenal starters, with the cod tart (a brilliant take on the Portuguese egg tart) and the relish on the squid ink cracker being the true highlights for their flavours and textures. Wonderful experience and definitely Michelin worthy.

We had a birthday lunch here and it was faultless. We dine in fine restaurants quite often and there are invariably one or two experimental dishes which miss the mark but everything we had here was utterly delicious (though to note we didn't have the tasting menu) I don't eat meat but my partner loved the water buffalo tartar and declared the mangalitsa the best pork he has ever eaten (served with a scrumptious mushroom dumpling dish) and I had the dumplings with egg yolk and truffle and a small bite of his apple pie. The wines suggested to pair with the food were all stunning and the waitress made such an effort to celebrate my partner's birthday that he was quite emotional. The venue too is stunning - a warehouse style conversion which has been impeccable divided into "rooms". The stylist deserves an award.
Very single course was very balanced and beautifully presented. The sommelier was also very good and paired the wine perfectly
The personal was attentive and friendly
