Budapest's underground hospital, a site steeped in history and fascinating to discover on a guided tour.
A fascinating place! In February 1939, a veritable hospital was opened in the miles of galleries beneath Castle Hill. It played a vital role during the siege of Buda, one of the longest in the history of the Second World War, receiving almost 700 patients. Closed after the war, the hospital was renovated in 1953 to become an anti-nuclear shelter, kept secret by the Communist authorities. Guided tours are compulsory.
