NEW THEATRE (ÚJSZÍNHÁZ)
Theater, a dazzling Art Deco building designed by architect Béla Lajta, near the Opera House.
In the vicinity of the Opera House, the New Theater was built according to the plans of the talented architect Béla Lajta (1909). Originally it was a club called Parisiana, which changed its function in 1919 to serve the dramatic arts. The building, often classified as Art Nouveau, is actually in a dazzling Art Deco style. Nationalized in 1949, it was turned into a social-realist building, so unsightly that in 1987, the city council decided to return it to the original!
