CITADEL (CITADELLA)
After walking from this Habsburg citadel, on top of the Gellért hill, there is a fantastic Danube panorama.
After the War of Independence of 1848-1849, the Austrians built this hostile fortress, whose cannons were turned towards Pest, where the revolution had originated. A symbol of defeat and oppression, the citadel was partly destroyed in 1897. The Statue of Liberty, erected in 1947 by the Soviets to commemorate their victory over the Nazi regime, stands 14 m tall. A long-awaited renovation is still underway. The aim is to make the surroundings more attractive and install a number of cafés. To be continued.
