ELISABETH BRIDGE (ERZSÉBET HÍD)
Plunging bridge at the foot of Mount Gellért in Budapest. Inaugurated in 1903, it required a rather complicated road layout.
Inaugurated in 1903, the bridge plunges at the foot of Mount Gellért and required a rather complicated road layout. An influential city councillor owned a piece of land there that he hoped to sell to the city at a high price. He managed, with bribes, to bring colleagues and engineers to his sights. The old Erzsébet híd was destroyed during the war and was not rebuilt identically. Its current structure was built in 1964.
