Budapest's first permanent bridge, this historic structure marked the first step towards the unification of Buda and Pest.
Budapest's first permanent bridge, the Lánchíd was built on the initiative of Count István Széchenyi. The work was directed by the Scottish engineer Adam Clark and lasted from 1842 to 1849. In the past, we used to cross over ice and floating bridges in the summer. The bridge marked a first step towards the unification of Buda and Pest, of which Széchenyi was a great supporter. Destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt identically in 1949.
