VÁROSLIGET (CITY WOODS) / MILLENIUM HÁZA
The cream of Budapest's golden age in a tree-lined park featuring museums, baths, zoo, skating rink/lake, circus and castle!
Following on from Heroes' Square is the Bois-de-la-Ville, one of Budapest's green lungs. The various activities on offer (the baths, Vajdahunyad Castle, the skating rink in winter, the zoo and a permanent circus) make this park very popular with Hungarians. Summer and winter alike, it's a great place to stroll with family and friends. In the woods, large lawns allow you to relax in the shade of a tree trunk. Since 2022-2023, the Hungarian government, through the Liget Budapest project, has reinforced the park's cultural vocation by turning it into an open-air museum district.
The Ethnographic Museum has moved here, and the House of Music opened in 2022. The Maison du Millénaire, renovated in 2019 (or Maison Olof Palme), is now home to the NEO Contemporary Art Space, a 350 m² space dedicated to contemporary art. The focus is on art education, with exhibitions, guided tours, children's workshops and events combining different artistic disciplines. The project takes place in a remarkable architectural setting, adorned with the famous Zsolnay ceramics, which also decorate the house's café-restaurant. The municipal opposition, which won the mayoralty of Budapest in 2019, opposes certain aspects of the project, such as the planned relocation of the Hungarian National Gallery. However, new play areas and restaurants have already been inaugurated, reinforcing the appeal of Bois-de-la-Ville for visitors and locals alike.
