VÁROSLIGET (CITY WOODS) / MILLENIUM HÁZA
The cream of Budapest's golden age in a tree-lined park featuring museums, baths, zoo, skating rink/lake, circus and castle!
The City Woods, one of the green lungs of Budapest, is located right next to Heroes' Square. The various activities (the baths, the Vajdahunyad castle, the skating rink in winter, the zoo and a year-round circus) make the park very popular with Hungarians. In summer and winter, you can go for a walk with your family, alone or with your dog. In the woods, there are large sunny lawns where you can lie down in the shade of a tree trunk. The government of Viktor Orbán has promised a bright future since 2022-2023, having transformed it into an open-air museum district. The Ethnographic Museum was moved there, and a new House of Music opened in 2022. Eventually, the Museum of Transport will be renovated as well as the Secession Theater. A pharaonic project that is not to the liking of the opposition, which won the mayor's office in Budapest in 2019 and has vowed to stop certain projects, such as the relocation of the Hungarian National Gallery located on the hill of the castle that remains there. In any case, new playgrounds for children, restaurants ... have already been inaugurated as well as the Olof Palme House. The latter, built in 1885, fell into disrepair and was restored to its former glory in 2019. Known as Millenium Háza (house of the millennium), one can stroll around the main exhibition retracing the Budapest of the golden age and sip coffee, have lunch or dinner surrounded by Zsolnay ceramics.
