SAINT-GENES CHURCH
This predominantly Romanesque church boasts the widest nave and largest cupola in Auvergne.
The original church was built in the 6th century, then rebuilt in the 11th. It underwent various alterations until the 16th century. It is the origin of the upper town. Following the discovery of the body of a young martyr, Genes, Avitus had a church built on the site of his burial. It has the widest nave in Auvergne. The dome at the crossing of the transept - also the largest in the region - is impressive in its size, and is decorated with frescoes, as is the choir. A 12th-century mosaic is on display, in part, in one of the chapels.
