SPINNING WHEEL VALLEY
An exceptional site housing two of the main cutlery-making activities: blade sharpening and polishing.
For several centuries, this exceptional site concentrated two of the main cutlery-making activities: the grinding and polishing of blades. The grinders, the lords of the cutlery trade, worked in spinning wheels to give the blades their sharpness. In Thiers, they worked lying on a wooden plank above their grindstone, with their dog on their legs as sole protection against the damp and cold. The ruins of these wheels are still visible. The last remaining spinning wheel, "Chez Lyonnet", is open to visitors in July and August.
