The Palmas Gate, located in front of the Puente de Armas, is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city

Built in front of the Puente de Armas and dating from the first half of the 16th century, it is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city. It had a triple function of access, control and symbolism. For this reason, its shape is based on that of the Roman triumphal arches, flanked by two crenellated towers and decorated with a coat of arms bearing the imperial coat of arms of Carlos V. Its towers were used as a royal prison until the end of the 19th century. After climbing an iron staircase, very spiral, we reach a beautiful view of the surroundings.
