ALCAZABA OF BADAJOZ
This citadel, built in 1169 by the Almohads, was one of the most important Moorish strongholds
The Alcazaba (citadel) was built in 1169 by the Almohads. Its strategic location soon made it one of the most important Moorish strongholds. Three mosques were built inside. The octagonal Espantaperros tower, typically Almohad despite its Mudejar crown, is quickly noticed, as are the battlements of the ramparts and the doors with horseshoe arches. The gardens of La Galera and the Palace of the Dukes of Roca (16th century) are located within the old fortress. The latter houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum.
