Badajoz was defended by a more modern fortress, built in the late seventeenth century
In addition to the medieval wall, Badajoz was also defended by a more modern fortress, built at the end of the 17th century, a complete complex including moats, covered walkways, outer fortresses and bastions. The fortress originally had eight bastions: San Pedro, Trinidad, Santa María, San Roque, San Juan, Santiago, San José and San Vicente, and two half-bastions: Palmas and San Antonio, the latter connecting the modern fortress to the medieval enclosure of the Muslim citadel. The latter linked the modern fortress to the medieval enclosure of the Muslim citadel, a complex that remained almost unchanged until the beginning of the 20th century.
