BASILICA AND CRYPTS OF SANTA EULALIA
Built in the xiiith century, it was built on a first Christian basilica dating from the Fifth Century, in honor of Santa Eulalia, martyrdom of the era of Diocletian and patron saint of the city of Merida. At the entrance, you will notice the famous «hornito», built in honor of Santa Eulalia with elements from a temple dedicated to Mars. Inside this very large basilica we will note the presbytery and the two side chapels, of Wisigothe origin. In 1990, work in this basilica made it possible to update vestiges of Roman houses, a Christian necropolis of the fourth century and a church of the Ve. Some of these crypts are decorated with beautiful wall paintings, very well preserved. A signposted circuit allows you to browse the basilica and the crypts.
