MUSEO NACIONAL DE ARTE ROMANO
Museum located in front of the entrance of the theater and the amphitheater houses a collection of ancient objects found around Merida
Located opposite the entrance to the theatre and amphitheatre, this building, inaugurated in 1986, is already worth a visit on its own. The work of Rafael Moneo, one of the leading figures in contemporary Spanish architecture and the first Spanish to receive the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize for Architecture, it is inspired by classical Roman architecture. Excavations carried out during its construction have uncovered Roman remains: the hydraulic system of San Lázaro, a section of the calzada, a Roman road, a necropolis and a house with decorated walls. The whole is kept in the crypt and it is recommended to start the visit with this first element. The museum also houses a very impressive collection of antique objects found around Merida (sculptures, mosaics, bronze objects...), organized into very educational themes (daily life, professional life...). An essential visit.
