Inaugurated in 8 B.C., this amphitheater of elliptical shape and impressive size, 126 m on the longest axis and 102 on the shortest, with a sand track of 54 m long and 41 m wide, was mainly used for gladiatorial fights and welcomed up to 15 000 spectators. The track could be transformed into a pool to stage naval battles. At the north and south ends, you will find various outbuildings used for gladiators and for the confinement of wild animals.
